Air conditioning Mayfield

Our workshop is on Dewpoint Lane in Mayfield, so a call from this suburb usually means the van is only a few streets away. We fit, service and fix air conditioning across Mayfield in Newcastle and the three Mayfields around it, West, North and East. Coming out to price a new system costs nothing.

They're based a few streets away, so the quote visit was the same morning I rang. Two splits in our old weatherboard, the pipes run up the side out of sight, and they were packed up by three.

Air conditioning in Mayfield 2304

Mayfield was the Toorak of Newcastle before it was a steel suburb, so the Mayfields hold everything from hilltop mansions to Lysaght's workers' cottages, and each wants a different system.

Mayfield is about 6 km north-west of the Newcastle city centre, with the Hunter River along its northern edge. It is named after Ada May, daughter of landowner John Scholey, whose 1884 house sits on the suburb's highest point. Through the 1880s and 1890s the western side was known as the Toorak of Newcastle, with large houses up on the hill for the views and the breeze, and Crebert Street still has several of them, including Bella Vista, built for the manager of the BHP works. BHP opened its steelworks on the river flats beside Mayfield on 2 June 1915, and it ran for 84 years until 30 September 1999. In Mayfield East, Lysaght's started a village for skilled English sheet-steel workers in 1920, and many of those homes still stand in Avon, Vine, Bull and Usk Streets. Today the shops run along Maitland Road, and the Tourle Street bridge takes traffic from Mayfield West across the river to Kooragang.

23What we do here

Air conditioning work around Mayfield

  • Old houses on the Mayfield hill

Large rooms and tall ceilings, built when a breeze was the only cooling. We usually suggest a split in each room you live in over one large unit, and we run the pipes along the least visible wall.

    Split Systems
  • Lysaght's homes in Mayfield East

Modest cottages from the early 1920s, some with a room added at the back since. One reverse cycle split in the living area does most of the work, and we check the old eaves and walls for a sound fixing point first.

    Split Systems
  • Shops and cafes on Maitland Road

Splits and small ducted systems for shopfronts and cafes, where a hot kitchen and a glass front heat the room fast. We book the work early in the morning or after closing, so you keep trading.

23Questions

Mayfield: common questions

Your workshop is in Mayfield. Does that get us a faster breakdown visit?

Often, yes. When a technician is between jobs nearby, a Mayfield breakdown can be seen the same morning, and the common parts come straight from the workshop. We can't promise it every time, because some days all three of us are across town. Ring, and we'll give you an honest time and tell you the call-out fee on the phone.

We own one of the big old houses on the Mayfield hill. Is ducted a good idea?

Sometimes. Ducted needs a roof space with room for the indoor unit and the ducts, and some of these old roofs are low pitched or have ornate ceilings you won't want cut. If the roof suits, zoned ducted cools every room evenly. If it doesn't, two or three well placed splits do the job, and we price both.

Do you work in Mayfield West, Mayfield North and Mayfield East too?

Yes, all three, and the suburbs that border Mayfield as well: Waratah, Georgetown, Islington and Tighes Hill. They're all a short drive from Dewpoint Lane, so they get the same quick response as Mayfield itself. We service and repair in all of them, and a quote for a new system there is free as well.

Our outdoor unit faces Maitland Road. Does the traffic grime matter?

It does over time. Road dust and exhaust film settle on the coil, and a dirty coil makes the compressor work harder and use more power. On a unit near a busy road we clean the outdoor coil properly at every service and check the fan blades, so it keeps cooling well on hot afternoons.

Can we drop into your Dewpoint Lane workshop to talk about a new system?

Ring first, please. It's a small workshop on a residential lane with no showroom, and the vans are mostly out. It's quicker for us to visit you, because we need to see your rooms, the roof space and where the outdoor unit could go before we can quote. That visit is free.

Our Lysaght's cottage in Mayfield East gets hot in the back extension. What helps?

A small split in the extension usually fixes it. An extension under a skillion roof with little insulation heats up well before the original rooms do. A compact reverse cycle unit sized to that room keeps it comfortable without overcooling the rest of the house, and it heats the room in winter too.
