Air conditioning in Singleton 2330
Singleton averages close to 32° on a January afternoon and just over 4° on a July night, and the heating half of a reverse cycle system is the half people here tend to underrate.
Singleton sits on the banks of the Hunter River, with a courthouse from 1841 and homesteads older still nearby, including Neotsfield from 1828 and Baroona from 1829. The river has flooded the town badly twice in living memory, in 1955 and 2007, and an embankment went up after the first. Coal mining is the largest employer, with about a quarter of the local workforce, and the army's Lone Pine Barracks lies about 8 km south of town. The Bureau of Meteorology's Singleton STP station averaged a January maximum of 31.8°C over 2002 to 2018, six degrees above Nobbys, and a July minimum of 4.2°C, where Nobbys holds 8.5°C. The town's coldest recorded morning was minus 4.2°C in August 1994, and frost is a regular part of an Upper Hunter winter. Out past the town, toward Broke, Bulga, Jerrys Plains and Camberwell, the blocks get bigger and the sheds and granny flats often want cooling of their own.
