A Belmont outdoor unit gets salt from the bay on a westerly and salt off Nine Mile Beach on a nor'easter, so on this side of the lake there's no wall that stays clean.
Belmont sits on a sandy peninsula with the Tasman Sea to the east and Lake Macquarie to the west, about 20 km south-west of the Newcastle CBD. The Awabakal name for the area, Bahtahbah, is usually translated as hill on a lake. Thomas Williamson took up land here in 1865, and Ada, Maude, Walter and Ernest streets carry his family's names. The 2021 census counted 7,289 people. On the lake side, Belmont Bay is home water for the Belmont 16ft Sailing Club, which raced its first skiffs there in October 1922. On the ocean side, Belmont Wetlands State Park was reserved in 2006 as the tenth state park in NSW, and has more than 4 km of frontage on Nine Mile Beach, with dunes between the houses and the surf.
